In a remarkable display of community commitment,On July 24, 2024, Mahatma Gandhi GJ School No. 1 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, became a hub of menstrual health education during the Menstrual Hygiene Literacy Camp, held from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. Organized by Saasha, this vital event focused on educating young girls about menstrual health and combating period poverty. With 29 enthusiastic participants, each girl received a  kit containing essential menstrual hygiene products, empowering them with knowledge and resources.

Stories of Transformation

During the camp, a poignant moment occurred when a young participant shared her experience. She revealed that prior educational sessions about menstruation typically involved watching videos, which left her confused and uninformed. However, she expressed that the hands-on, interactive approach of this camp finally helped her understand menstruation comprehensively. This highlights the importance of engaging, personalized menstrual health education in overcoming gaps in understanding and ensuring better menstrual hygiene management.

Saasha played a crucial role in this transformation. Her engaging, personalized teaching style and patient explanations made complex topics accessible and relatable. By addressing the girls’ questions and concerns directly, Saasha was able to bridge gaps in their knowledge and foster a more thorough understanding of menstrual health. This experience underscores the significance of interactive and empathetic menstrual health education in empowering young girls and enhancing menstrual hygiene management.

Common Misconceptions and Questions

During the camp, a significant point of confusion emerged regarding dietary restrictions during menstruation. About 50% of the girls believed that pickles should be avoided, while the other 50% thought that consuming pickles was beneficial. This highlights a prevalent misconception about menstrual dietary guidelines that needs to be clarified through accurate health education.

Several other questions surfaced, reflecting the participants' need for more information on menstrual products:

- Does the menstrual cup hurt? This question highlighted the need for detailed education on the comfort and use of various menstrual products.

- Does the tampon get stuck inside the vagina? Addressing this concern was essential for dispelling myths and ensuring proper understanding of menstrual products.

Saasha, with her calm and reassuring demeanor, adeptly addressed all these queries. Her patient explanations and clear information helped dispel misconceptions and provided the participants with a better understanding of menstrual hygiene and product use.
