The session began with a writing activity where the girls were asked to express what they understood about the term “periods.” Most of the responses revealed deep-rooted misconceptions: many girls viewed menstruation as a disease, a painful experience, or something inherently negative. These beliefs reflected the lack of education and open conversations around the menstrual cycle in their communities. Additionally, none of the girls knew how to track or calculate their cycles, which further highlighted the need for menstrual health education.

Empowering Girls with Menstrual Health Awareness

The session sought to change this narrative by providing accurate information and creating a safe space for discussion. Through open conversations, the girls learned that menstruation is a natural and healthy process, not something to fear or hide. The importance of feminine hygiene and using proper menstrual hygiene products, such as sanitary pads and reusable sanitary products, was emphasized to empower them with the knowledge to manage their periods with dignity.
A key highlight of the event was an engaging activity where the girls created their own period calendars. This hands-on exercise helped them better understand how to track their menstrual cycles, giving them valuable tools to manage their periods proactively. The activity instilled a sense of confidence and helped the girls dispel the confusion they had been living with, making a profound impact on their understanding of their bodies.

Impact on Health Awareness and Social Welfare

By the end of the session, the girls expressed a significant shift in their mindset. What had once been a source of fear and embarrassment was now viewed as a natural part of life. This transformation illustrates the power of health education programs in breaking the silence around menstruation and promoting gender equality in community health. The event also addressed period poverty by distributing free sanitary pads to ensure the girls have access to the necessary menstrual products. This combination of health workshops and sanitary pad distribution is critical for improving women’s well-being in underserved areas, where menstrual hygiene management is often neglected due to lack of resources and education.
