In Lucknow, Rupa Kanaujia faced significant responsibilities at just 17. She was the oldest of Seven siblings in a family struggling to make ends meet. Her father earned a modest income as a clothes presser, while her mother worked as a domestic helper. Despite these challenges, Rupa excelled in school. Recently, she finished 12th grade with top marks, showcasing her determination and hard work. However, the cost of college, totaling ₹7000 each year including exam fees, was a significant concern that her family couldn't afford.
Then came PunyaKalash, a program run by the Pinkishe Foundation. PunyaKalash collects small monthly donations from people who want to help others. This money is used to support those in need, chosen by the donors together. It's a way for people to give back and make a positive impact in their community.
PunyaKalash not only covered Rupa's college expenses but also gave her the opportunity to take a vocational course alongside her studies. This support eased the financial burden on her family and opened up more opportunities for her future. As she continues her education, supported by PunyaKalash, her story encourages others to believe in the power of community and the importance of helping each other succeed.

This month, we highlight the inspiring journey of Shakuntala Devi, a mother of two from Mandawali, Delhi, whose life has been marked by struggle and resilience. With her children, aged 12 and 7, attending a local government school, Shakuntala Devi faced immense challenges in covering basic needs such as food, rent, and educational expenses. Her husband, a day labourer, spent his meager earnings on alcohol, leaving Shakuntala Devi solely responsible for her family's welfare.
This was organized by Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology (MAIT) with the support of Pinkishe Foundation at Kanhaiya Nagar Slum on 1st September, 2024. The event, which hoped to provide knowledge on menstrual health and hygiene while creating awareness and access around feminine hygiene.
