Donating to an Indian NGO from abroad: FCRA, explained simply

Many people abroad want to give back to India. The rules depend on one thing: your passport.

If you are an Indian citizen living abroad (NRI)

If you hold an Indian passport and give from your own savings, through normal banking channels, your donation is not a foreign contribution. You give the way donors in India do, on our India page. You can use your Indian bank account, card or UPI.

The tax deduction under Section 133 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (earlier Section 80G) helps only if you pay tax in India.

If you hold a foreign passport, including an OCI card

Your donation is a foreign contribution under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010 (FCRA). An Indian NGO can accept it only if it is registered under FCRA, and only into its FCRA account at the State Bank of India, New Delhi Main Branch.

Pinkishe Foundation is registered under FCRA. Please give on our international page.

A donation from abroad carries no Indian tax benefit.

Are you a US taxpayer who needs a US tax receipt? Give through CAF America instead →

US taxpayers who need a US deduction should give through CAF America. In that route your gift is made to CAF America, which issues your US receipt, deducts an administrative fee and then grants the funds on to us at its own discretion.

Why we ask for your address

Indian law asks us to report every foreign donor's name and address. So our international donation window asks for your full postal address and nationality. Your passport number is optional.

Three quick checks before you give to any Indian NGO

  1. Is it FCRA registered? If you hold a foreign passport, it must be.
  2. Does it publish its accounts? Look for audited accounts on its website.
  3. Does it tell you what your money does? For us: $25 covers two girls' menstrual protection, education and support for a year.
