Ending period poverty since 2017

A girl should never be shamed out of her own classroom.

About $25 keeps four girls in school for a whole year, with safe menstrual protection and honest education. From wherever you are, you can give them that year.

One stain, in front of the whole class. For a great many girls in India, this is the day school quietly ends.

The day the cloth betrayed her

“Nahi, mai school nahi jaungi.”

No, I will not go to school.

Rani sat on her bed, curled into her quilt, staring at her frayed schoolbag on the floor. Her mother stood at the door. Beta, aaj bhi school nahi jana?

It was the third day of her period, and Rani was not going to school. Again.

The cloth she used was torn from an old saree her mother had handed down. It shifted. It smelled. It leaked. The month before, it had leaked in class. Her uniform stained, her classmates noticed, and the teasing that followed was more than she could carry. After that, going to school during her period felt impossible.

A reusable pad changed it. Cotton, leak-proof, buttoned so it stays put. Today Rani walks to school on all five days.

Why it keeps happening

Rani is not unusual. That is the hard part.

Millions of girls across India manage their periods with cloth, rags or newspaper, because nothing better is within reach.

1 in 5girls in India drop out of school by the time of their first period
71%of girls have never heard of menstruation before it happens to them
$6is all it takes to end that for one girl, for a whole year

Figures published by Pinkishe Foundation from our own field programmes.

What $6 does

One girl, one year, inside her own school

We do not hand out pads at the roadside and leave. We work inside a girl’s school, so that what she gets is there next month too.

1

Pads she can reach

A Pad Bank and a vending unit inside her school, stocked and refilled, so she is never sent home.

2

Someone who can answer

Sessions for her class, an orientation for the boys, and a trained teacher she can go to all year.

3

Somewhere to dispose

Disposal handled properly, which is the part most menstrual programmes quietly skip.

4

She stays in class

No missed days, no shame. Just a girl who keeps learning, five days a month she used to lose.

“Before this programme, I missed school every month. Now I feel informed and confident, and I never miss a class.”

You are in good company

Mr Amitabh Bachchan stood up for these girls

Amitabh Bachchan speaking in support of Pinkishe Foundation

He did not have to. He recorded this for Pinkishe because one in five girls in India leaves school when her periods begin, and most of them have never been told what is happening to them.

Watching takes two minutes. Giving takes one.

Your questions, answered

Can I donate from outside India?
Yes. This page is for foreign nationals and foreign-source contributions. Your gift is received into our FCRA-designated bank account in full compliance with the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010.
Is my donation tax-deductible?
That depends on where you pay tax. India’s Section 80G benefit applies to Indian taxpayers only, so a gift made on this page does not carry an Indian tax benefit for a foreign donor, and it does not carry a US one either. US taxpayers who need a US deduction should give through CAF America, which has validated Pinkishe Foundation. In that route your gift is made to CAF America, which issues your US receipt, deducts an administrative fee and then grants the funds on to us at its own discretion. Give through CAF America → For any other country, please write to chair@pinkishe.org.
How is my money used?
About $6 covers one girl’s menstrual protection and education for a year in a school where we already work. That includes her pads and her share of the classroom sessions and the trained teacher. It does not pretend our overheads are zero. Our audited accounts for the last three years are published on our partnerships page.
Which currencies and methods can I use?
Twelve currencies are offered: US dollars, pounds, euros, Canadian dollars, Australian dollars, Singapore dollars, Hong Kong dollars, Malaysian ringgit, UAE dirhams, Saudi riyals, Qatari riyals and Indian rupees. The window opens in rupees, so please change the currency at the top to your own, and the amounts change with it. International debit and credit cards and popular wallets are accepted, and every transaction is securely encrypted.
Will I receive a receipt?
Yes, a receipt is emailed to you immediately after your gift. A US tax receipt is issued by CAF America only when you give through the CAF America route. For country-specific documentation, contact chair@pinkishe.org.

Give a girl her school days back.

Wherever you are in the world, your gift means a girl in India opens her books tomorrow instead of staying home. It takes one minute.
