Period Tracking Apps: What They Can and Cannot Do

Period tracking apps: a simple guide

A period tracking app is a tool on your phone that keeps a record of your periods. You enter the first day of each period, and the app estimates when the next one will come. Many apps also let you note pain, flow, mood and other symptoms. Used well, they can help you know your body better. They also have limits, and it helps to know them.

What a tracking app can do for you

  • Help you plan. An estimate of your next period means fewer surprises at school, college or work.
  • Show patterns. Over a few months, you may see how your cycle length, pain or mood change through the month.
  • Help you talk to a doctor. If something feels wrong, a record of dates and symptoms makes it easier for a doctor to understand what is happening.
  • Remind you. Many apps can remind you that your period is due, or to take a medicine at the same time each day.

What a tracking app cannot do

  • It gives estimates, not facts. The app guesses from the dates you enter. If your cycle is irregular, as it often is in the first years after periods start, the guesses will be less reliable.
  • It is not contraception. Apps estimate "fertile days", but ovulation can shift from month to month. There is no fully safe day. Do not rely on an app to avoid pregnancy. If you want to avoid pregnancy, talk to a doctor about contraception.
  • It cannot diagnose a health problem. If the app shows very short, very long or missing cycles, see a doctor rather than waiting for the app to explain it.

Choosing an app

  • Easy to use. You are more likely to keep using an app that is quick to update.
  • Privacy. Your period data is personal. Read what the app collects and who it shares it with. Give it only the information you need to.
  • Works offline, or without an account, if you would rather your data stayed on your phone.

You do not need an app at all. A calendar, a diary or a notes app on your phone works too. You can also use our period and ovulation calculator to estimate your next period.

When to see a doctor

  • Your cycle is often shorter than 21 days or longer than 35 days.
  • Your period lasts more than seven days, or you soak through a pad every hour or two.
  • Your periods stop for three months and you are not pregnant.
  • You bleed between periods or after sex.
  • Pain keeps you away from school, college or work.

FAQs

What is a period tracking app?

An app that records the dates of your periods and your symptoms, and estimates when your next period will come.

Are period tracking apps accurate?

They are only as good as the dates you enter, and they work best when your cycle is regular. Treat their predictions as estimates.

Can I use an app to avoid pregnancy?

No. An app cannot tell you for certain when you will ovulate, and no day is fully safe. Talk to a doctor about contraception.

Is my data safe in a period app?

It depends on the app. Read its privacy policy, check what it shares, and give it only the information you need to.

Do I need an app to track my period?

No. A calendar or a notebook works just as well. What matters is noting the first day of each period and any symptoms.

In short

A tracking app can help you plan and notice changes in your cycle. It is a helper, not a doctor and not a method of contraception. If something about your period worries you, see a doctor or call our menstrual helpline.
