Monsoon is a beautiful season, but it brings its own set of challenges for menstruators. The hot and humid weather, combined with increased moisture in the environment and menstrual fluid, creates an ideal breeding ground for bacterial and fungal infections. During this time, many women experience a surge in napkin rashes, fungal infections, and vaginal infections. To help you stay healthy and comfortable, here are some essential tips to manage your menstrual hygiene effectively during the monsoon.
Menstrual cups are a great alternative to disposable sanitary pads. They are not only eco-friendly but also help reduce the risk of infections. Menstrual cups collect menstrual fluid rather than absorbing it, minimising the chances of bacterial growth. If you are comfortable, make the switch and enjoy a hassle-free period.
If you prefer reusable pads, it's crucial to ensure they are completely dry before use. During the monsoon, sunlight might be scarce, making it harder to dry pads naturally. In such cases, fan drying is a good option, though it might take longer. Avoid using an iron to dry your pads, as it can damage the fabric and reduce its effectiveness.
Regardless of the menstrual product you use, it’s important to change it every 4 hours. Prolonged use of any product increases the risk of bacterial and fungal growth, leading to infections. Regular changes help maintain hygiene and prevent discomfort.
Tight clothing can increase sweating and moisture retention, which can lead to infections. Opt for loose and breathable fabrics like cotton during your period to stay comfortable and reduce the risk of rashes and infections.
Hydration is key to managing your menstrual health. Along with plain water, include fluids like coconut water, lassi, and chhachh in your diet. These drinks help maintain hydration levels and provide essential nutrients.
During your period, it’s best to consume light and home-cooked meals. Avoid leguminous foods that can cause bloating and discomfort. A balanced diet helps keep your energy levels up and reduces menstrual discomfort.
Yogurt (dahi) is rich in probiotics that promote good vaginal health. Incorporate seeds like chia and flaxseed into your diet, as they are packed with nutrients that support overall well-being during menstruation.
Carbonated drinks, sweetened beverages, and excessive tea can dehydrate you, exacerbating menstrual discomfort. Limit their intake and focus on hydrating, nutrient-rich fluids instead.
By following these simple tips, you can manage your menstrual cycle effectively and enjoy the monsoon season without any worries. Remember, taking proper care of your menstrual hygiene is essential to avoid infections and stay comfortable. Enjoy the rains, take care of your health, and make the most of this beautiful season!
