On June 18th, 2024, a Menstrual Health & Hygiene Education Camp was conducted at Raipur Bangar Village, Greater Noida, organized by Pinkishe Foundation in collaboration with The Paree Project, named after the Hindi word for "fairy," symbolizing empowerment for women. This initiative aimed to address the global challenge of period poverty in rural communities, specifically educating women and girls on safe menstrual health and hygiene practices.
The event successfully reached 58 women and girls from the underserved community. The session began with a focus on maintaining proper hygiene during menstruation to prevent infections and promote overall health. Practical tips were offered, and the correct use and disposal of sanitary pads were demonstrated, highlighting the importance of using clean and safe menstrual products.
An integral part of the camp was an open discussion on menstrual taboos, where attendees were encouraged to share their experiences and beliefs. This created a supportive environment to dispel myths and address misconceptions surrounding menstruation. The interactive nature of the session ensured personalized guidance, ensuring each participant left with a clear understanding of effective menstrual health management.
Additionally, 58 Reusable pad kits were distributed during the event, aiming to provide sustainable menstrual solutions and immediate relief to the participants. This distribution further supported the promotion of safe menstrual practices in the community.
The Menstrual Health & Hygiene Education Camp marked a significant milestone in empowering women and girls with essential knowledge and resources for managing their menstrual health confidently. This month, we highlight the inspiring journey of Shakuntala Devi, a mother of two from Mandawali, Delhi, whose life has been marked by struggle and resilience. With her children, aged 12 and 7, attending a local government school, Shakuntala Devi faced immense challenges in covering basic needs such as food, rent, and educational expenses. Her husband, a day labourer, spent his meager earnings on alcohol, leaving Shakuntala Devi solely responsible for her family's welfare.
This was organized by Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology (MAIT) with the support of Pinkishe Foundation at Kanhaiya Nagar Slum on 1st September, 2024. The event, which hoped to provide knowledge on menstrual health and hygiene while creating awareness and access around feminine hygiene.
